Once you’ve determined that you are ready to hire a marketing agency, you need to find the right one for your company. It’s expensive and requires a mutual trust relationship.

Here are some important questions to ask and signs to look for when evaluating a marketing agency.

  • Ask to see a company portfolio
  • Avoid marketing companies that start planning your strategy before they know what you want and need
  • Beware of any marketing company that promises to take over your marketing and PR entirely
  • Communication and documentation should be professional from the start

1. Ask to see a company portfolio

Take a look at the marketing firm’s website and see if they work with clients in your industry. Do they really understand your particular needs? The marketing firm you hire should have experience in your industry and working with clients your size.

  • Ask the firm to talk about their successes in the past.
  • Ask them about their failures too, what they learned, and how they made things right for the client.
  • Make sure they can talk about client successes in terms of helping to achieve business results, not just getting high-profile placements.
  • Ask them about the process of working together.
  • Ask them what they can help you achieve at different budget levels.
  • Ask them why they recommend a specific promotional tactic or media outlet.

2. Avoid marketing companies that start planning your strategy before they know what you want and need

Find a company that will put in the time to understand your value proposition before they start planning your strategy.

For example, we seldom recommend press releases as a primary form of outreach for startups. Posting it on a newswire service will more often than not give you little meaningful results. Sending it to a reporter will typically annoy them. Unless you’re already a household name or publicly traded, skip the press release entirely, or at least recognise that it’s one of many outreach tactics you can use.

Most companies will offer you a suite of services and charge you for items like a press release, even if you do not need them.

3. Beware of any marketing company that promises to take over your marketing and PR entirely

Wait? Aren’t you hiring a marketing agency to take over?

Reporters and customers want to hear directly from startup founders, especially at the early stages. A good marketing and PR company can help you with a strategy and messaging to make your outreach more effective, but if they’re doing 100% of the outreach themselves, you won’t like the results.

4. Communication and documentation should be professional from the start

Your relationship with your marketing firm will require mutual trust and clear communication.   Before signing the contract you need to be sure that you will be comfortable working with the agency you’ve chosen. Outsourcing your marketing needs to an agency means that you will be working together, often quite closely. Mutual respect and understanding is key. That means setting realistic expectations and reading the contract carefully before signing.
